Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 is compiled from sources available from
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/4/en/os/i386/SRPMS. Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0
is NOT affiliated with, produced, maintained or supported by Red Hat, Inc. in any way. Lineox
has changed or replaced only graphics files and text strings and programs used to update packages.
The preferred package management and update tool in Lineox Enterprise Linux is apt-get which
resolves package dependencies automatically. Lineox Enterprise Linux has also a graphical frond-end
for apt-get called synaptic. The other supported package management tool is yum, but unfortunately
it hasn't yet have a mature and well tested graphical frond-end.
Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.076 DVD-ROM contents
Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.076 DVD-ROM contains both 32 and 64 bit versions for
x86 and x86_64 architectures. 32 bit version installation boots as default and
64 bit version installation can be started with "linux64 <optional parameters>"
at the first prompt.
Besides the base distribution packages, Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.076 DVD-ROM contains
much more software. The most important subdirectories on the disk are:
apt.sw.be contains DAG repositories for i386 and x86_64 architectures, size 2.8GB.
RHAPS2 contains application server suites for both architectures, size 608MB.
RHCS contains cluster suite for i386 architecture (x86_64 version is in the base OS), size 2.5MB.
RHDS2.1 contains developer suites for both architectures, size 347MB.
RHGFS/ contains GFS cluster file system for i386 architecture (x86_64 version is in the base OS), size 1MB.
All the package directories have the metadata for apt-get and yum package management systems, so the
package installation is easy with dependencies resolved automatically.
There are no visible changes in the final version, so this
screenshot tour
is completely up to date.
A Reliable Linux with Long and Reliable Support
Because the update source packages are GPL licensed, the source code must be released
and it is possible for a technically competent person to compile it to
binary form. Lineox has made this process automatic and offers binary updated packages as a part
of service that automates also solving package dependencies.
Lineox™ Enterprise Linux 4.0 has the following errata policy:
Full Support (including hardware updates): to Aug 31, 2008
Maintenance Support: to Feb 29, 2012
Most Linux distributions are made of packages,
which contain also information about what other programs or libraries that particular package needs
to function. These dependencies can be quite difficult to resolve by a human, but that was the way
it was done earlier in rpm based distributions if you wanted to update or add new software. It is no longer
any news that there are more modern package managers like apt-get and yum which can resolve dependencies
automatically. You just have to have a repository, which offers the packages and a database with information about
package requirements.
Lineox has added to Lineox™ Enterprise Linux 4.0 both of these advanced package managers
and offers updates from both atp-get and yum styles of repositories. Also the base distribution
is offered from both styles of repositories, so if you have either apt-get or yum set up (comes
as a default if you have installed Lineox™ Enterprise Linux 4.0) you can
just decide what package or program you wish to add or update and the rest will be automatically
handled.
